[ Much like Nigel's first post, there is only silence when the device first clicks on. Eventually, though, the young man on the other end of the connection clears his throat. His tone is politely curious. ]

I've been told that the dead do not stay dead here and in ways much more involved than the occasional curse. Which leaves me wondering, City: is there no need for undertakers here?

[ There's a pause and then Nigel adds: ]  I had hoped to make myself useful.

I have a pretty good rate. And the odds here work for me.

But at the end of the day, some people do die.

And some of those people do not come back. Who handles the dead bodies? Surely not the doctors.

It's a rare event. After autopsy we usually hand things over to the relatives, or friends. They make their own arrangements.

Half the time a grave crops up of its own accord.

I see. I didn't know it was so rare.

There are more that don't come through the hospital directly. Not enough to base a career on, particularly when you're seventeen and completely lacking experience.

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Who starts a career here? He doesn't even need the money.

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Seventeen and completely lacking experience. It's a delicate job.
synanthrope: (Saya - consideration)

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think most people have space to complain about experience.

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Right, we'll just hand out flyers at the mall for morgue work. The restaurants are overstaffed, and aspirating a cavity's not much different to filling a garlic kiev, really.

He'd need a degree. At the least he'd need someone with a degree looking over him.

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
You misunderstand. Did you think I was looking for him to be unsupervised?

Don't treat me as though I'm stupid, Robert. I'm not.

[She doesn't sound angry, or upset, simply matter-of-fact]

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're not. But I told you, there's no one here I'd refer him to.
synanthrope: (Saya - consideration)

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Then he'll have to find something else to occupy his time.

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind talking through options with him. But in terms of anatomy study, he won't find much that's hands-on. Whose hands are on them is something people still get funny about.

How does one get added to the list?

1/2

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
[There's just a laugh]

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Can I stop by, tomorrow? I've got the day free.
synanthrope: (Saya - the upward gaze)

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course. Come by the garage. We'll take a car out. I'll even let you drive.

[Because there's still a bullethole in her shoulder, she can't shift as quickly as she likes, and if Saya can't do something perfectly she doesn't do it at all.]

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Really?

[The perils of a lengthy shift schedule means missing important things, sometimes. Not that he's given to turning gift horses down.]
synanthrope: (Saya - dark eyes)

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. You may choose which car.

Just not the Bentley, it's getting work done.

[Besides it'll give Mouse and Freddy something to do, cleaning up what the salt and grit do to it afterwards.]

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
You know which car.

Good. I'll answer your other question then.
synanthrope: (Saya - watch the weaving)

[personal profile] synanthrope 2010-12-17 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'll see you tomorrow, then.

[identity profile] worksmart.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
See you tomorrow.
